QUESTION:
Are we allowed to play lullabies to children to help them calm down and fall asleep? The lullabies seem to assist in helping the child to settle.
ANSWER:
A lullaby refers to a quiet, gentle song that is sung to send a child to sleep. It will not be permissible to play lullabies when putting children off to sleep, whether one sings it to the child himself/herself, or plays it on a phone. Majority of these lullabies, if not all, have Kuffar connotations in it, and generally accompanied with Haraam music when played on the phone.
One should rather read the Quraan Majeed or engage in Zikrullah when putting the child off to sleep. These will be the last words heard by the child before falling off to sleep and it will have a positive impact on the child. The names of Allah and the word of Allah Ta’ala will only prove beneficial.
Allah Ta’ala mentions in the Quraan Majeed:
الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَتَطْمَئِنُّ قُلُوبُهُمْ بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ أَلا بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ تَطْمَئِنُّ الْقُلُوبُ (الرعد 28)
Those who have Imaan and whose hearts are contented with the Zikr of Allah. Behold, Hearts are contented with the Zikr of Allah.
In conclusion, putting the children to sleep by singing lullabies is the way of the Kuffar.
ALLAH TA’ALA ALONE IN HIS INFINITE KNOWLEDGE KNOWS BEST!
