Females applying Itr and venturing outdoors

QUESTION:

It is Sunnah for males to wear Itr. Would it then be permissible for females to also wear Itr out of the house if accompanied by a Mahram?

ANSWER:

It is not permissible for a female to apply Itr and leave the home. The Hadith states that a female who applies Itr or perfume, and passes by the people, then she is an adulterous.

عَنْ غُنَيْمِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ، عَنْ الْأَشْعَرِيِّ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: ” أَيُّمَا امْرَأَةٍ اسْتَعْطَرَتْ، فَمَرَّتْ بِقَوْمٍ لِيَجِدُوا رِيحَهَا فَهِيَ زَانِيَةٌ (مسند احمد)
