QUESTION:
I’d like to enquire if Hijab styling is permissible in Shariah? I have noticed it has become quite a Fitnah among the women. Hijab has lost its essence. It’s suppose to be simple not make people look twice. It has been brought down to just covering the hair and nothing more. Whether it’s worn with jeans or short-sleeves, it’s stilled considered Hijab because it’s covering one’s hair.
Also, for a person who styles Hijab, will they be sinful for non-Mahram men who admire her or an another female who follows this and styles her Hijab?
ANSWER:
Hijaab is to completely conceal a female, as covering the female’s entire body is Waajib when venturing outdoors due to necessity or before non-Mahrams. It is not to make a female look more attractive or draw more attention as is the objective of Hijab styling. Yes, a female is permitted to adorn herself within the home for her husband (within the limits of Shariah), but adorning oneself and using cosmetics and perfume out of the home is not permitted. The following Hadith indicates that females should conceal themselves fully and not allow themselves to be exposed at all when venturing outdoors. Hadrat Hafsa Radiallahu Anha went to Aisha Radiallahu Anha whilst wearing a thin head scarf. Aisha Radiallahu Anha tore it and made her wear a scarf made of thick material. [Madhaahir-ul-Haqq Pg.179 Vol.4 New Edition] Furthermore, although females are permitted to wear all colours, bright colours draw the attention of the opposite gender and thus should not be worn when emerging outdoors.
Yes, one that adorns herself to attract the opposite gender will be sinful. If others follow her in doing so, then both will be equally sinful, one for perpetrating the sin and the other for leading her to the sin.
Secondly, wearing Hijaab in no way means that one may adopt western attire since one is wearing a cloak or Hijaab. The Quraan Sharif prohibits us from inclining towards the ways of the Kuffar which includes their dressing, thus we should dress according to Shariah.
