Females Greeting Males

QUESTION:

Is it correct for a married, Muslim woman to greet Muslim and non-Muslim adult males?

ANSWER:

The jurists have written that, if a young woman makes Salaam to males, then it is not Waajib upon the males to reply to her Salaam, particularly if there is fear of Fitnah. This clearly indicates that females should not be greeting males whether they are Muslim, or non-Muslim. In our times, there is a strong fear of Fitnah irrespective of the age of the female, hence she should not initiate Salaam at all.

وقد نظم الجلال السيوطي المواضع التي لا يجب فيها رد السلام ونقلها عنه الشارح في هامش الخزائن فقال رد السلام واجب إلا على من في الصلاة أو بأكل شغلا أو شرب أو قراءة أو أدعيه أو ذكر أو في خطبة أو تلبيه أو في قضاء حاجة الإنسان أو في إقامة أو الأذان أو سلم الطفل أو السكران أو شابة يخشى بها افتتان أو فاسق أو ناعس أو نائم أو حالة الجماع أو تحاكم أو كان في الحمام أو مجنونا   (حاشية ابن عابدين ص618 ج1)
