Gathering on the 40th day Post-Burial
QUESTION:
Is there any basis in Shari’ah for the practice of gathering to recite Quraan for the deceased on the 40th day (Chaliswa) or Salwa after one year?
ANSWER:
There is no basis in Islam for gathering on the 40th day, or after one year, to recite the Quraan for the deceased. This is a Bid’ah (innovation). The correct manner is that a person recites Quraan individually and conveys the rewards to the deceased person at any time.
