Period of Mourning

QUESTION:

What is the specified time period to mourn over the deceased?

ANSWER:

Mourning is allowed for three days for anyone besides a widow who loses her husband. It is not permissible to mourn for more than three days. This includes mourning the loss of parents, children, relatives, or others. However, a woman can mourn the loss of her husband for four months and ten days.

لَا يَحِلُّ لِامْرَأَةٍ تُؤْمِنُ بِاَللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ أَنْ تَحُدَّ عَلَى مَيِّتٍ فَوْقَ ثَلَاثٍ إلَّا عَلَى زَوْجِهَا فَإِنَّهَا تَحُدُّ أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرًا

(صحيح البخاري 1280)

عن علي مرفوعا من مر على المقابر وقرأ قل هو الله أحد إحدى عشرة مرة ثم وهب أجره للأموات أعطي من الأجر بعدد الأموات  (تحفة الاحوذي 3/275)
