Haidh And Contraception

Sep 15, 2026 | Haidh And Nifaas, Medical Matters

QUESTION:

The contraceptive pill is effectively a hormone pill administered for 3 weeks, and a sugar pill during the fourth week of the month. It is at this point that bleeding will then occur. Considering that the bleeding is not caused by ovulation, will the bleeding still be classified as Haidh? Should women refrain from Salaah, fasting, etc. during this time?

ANSWER:

The principle in Shariah is that when a woman sees blood for more than three days, then that blood should be counted as the blood of Haidh, if her Haidh is due at that time. As such, if you are experiencing blood at the time when you generally get your period, and it continues for more than three days, then it will be regarded as your Haidh. If bleeding occurs at such a time that is not time for your Haidh, or you bleed for less than three days, then it will Istihaadha.
