Halaal meat stored with Haraam meat
QUESTION:
Would it be permissible to buy Halaal meat products from grocery stores where it is kept in the same freezer along with Haraam meat and other products?
ANSWER:
If a Muslim slaughtered an animal in accordance to Shariah, and thereafter handed it over over to a Kaafir (or a non-Muslim store), then the meat will be considered as Halaal. [Ahsanul Fataawa Pg.130 Vol.8] However, one should refrain from purchasing meat from a store which keeps both Halaal and Haraam meat in the same freezer, due to the fear of contamination. The packaging could tear at times in the freezer and Haraam meat could then come into contact with the Halaal meat. We therefore advise abstention. Also, we should refrain from purchasing meat products from all non-Muslim stores, even if the meat is certified Halaal and kept separately, as the Muslim public has been deceived many times with false certification, Haraam meat and even pork!
