QUESTION:
What is the stance of the Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jama’ah with regards to the following story of the angels Haroot and Maroot:
“They were sent to earth with human inclinations, after they talked of the weaknesses of men. Then, coming down and falling in love with a woman called Zuhrah.”
Is there any authenticity to this, or is it an Israeli Riwaayah?
ANSWER:
Hafiz Ibn Kathir Rahimahullah states that the narration is not Saheeh, and it is Munkar (a Hadith whose narrator is weak and his narration contradicts authentic narrators). Allama Suyuti Rahimahullah has indicated towards its weakness as well and states that it is from the Israaeeli narrations.
عَنْ جَابِرٍ، عَنْ أَبِي الطُّفَيْلِ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ
«لَعَنَ اللَّهُ الزّهَرة، فَإِنَّهَا هِيَ التِي فَتَنَتِ الْمَلَكَيْنِ هَارُوتَ وَمَارُوتَ». وَهَذَا أَيْضًا لَا يَصِحُّ (٧) وَهُوَ مُنْكَرٌ جِدًّا. وَاللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ (تفسير ابن كثير ج١ص١٧٦)
