QUESTION:
I am going to start an online store for my business. I will be using a courier company to deliver my orders. However they are advising that I insure my goods, reason being, that the high risk involved with their vehicles being targets of theft/hijacking. I, on 2 occasions, personally experienced this when buying from suppliers. Will it then be permissible take out insurance on the goods sold?
ANSWER:
No, it is not permissible to insure the goods due to it containing the element of interest and gambling.

In previous times, the righteous and pious people would calculate the monthly premium (that one would pay to an insurance company) and discharge that amount in charity. Through the blessings of Sadaqah, their goods would be protected. Also, if one correctly discharges his Zakaat, then his wealth will be protected. This is mentioned in the narration of Baihaqi which is recorded below:
عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: حَصِّنُوا أَمْوَالَكُمْ بالزَّكاةِ، وَدَاوُوا مَرْضَاكُمْ بِالصَّدَقَةِ، وَاسْتَقْبِلُوا أَمْوَاجَ الْبَلَاءِ بِالدُّعَاءِ )شعب الإيمان #3279(
Abu Umamah Radiallahu Anhu reports that Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam is reported to have said, “Protect your wealth through Zakaat, treat your sick ones through Sadaqah and approach the waves of calamity through Dua.”
