Kaffarah for a number of fast intentionally broken

Nov 8, 2022 | Qadha And Kaffarah

Question:-

With regards to Qadhaa and Kaffarah of fasting, if a person does not recall how many fasts he has missed, would one Kaffarah make up for all the missed fasts or would he have to keep on repeating the Kaffarah?

Answer:-

If a person broke a number of fasts of Ramadaan (by eating or drinking intentionally without a valid reason), then Qadhaa and Kaffarah will be necessary. Now, if he hasn’t yet discharged the Kaffarah then just one Kaffarah will suffice for all the fasts that were intentionally broken during the month of Ramadaan, whether the fasts were broken in the Ramadaan of one year, or over a number of years. Together with the Kaffarah, he will have to keep the missed fasts as well. Since, he is not aware of the actual number of fasts that were broken, he will have to estimate the number of fasts and make Qadhaa.
