Keeping names of Malaa’ikah

QUESTION:

Are we permitted to keep the names of the angels?

ANSWER:

Through certain Ahadith, we learn that the names of the Malaaikah should not be kept, although the narrations may be classified as weak. Furthermore, the Fuqaha have written that those names that were not kept in the time of the pious predecessors and are not well known should not be kept. Allama Baghawi states in Sharhus Sunnah that it is Makrooh to name one with the names of the angels, such as Jibraeel and Mikaeel, as Umar Radiallahu Anhu disliked it, and none of the Sahaaba named their children using the names of the angels.

قال الإمام البغوي في شرح السنة : ويكره التسمي بأسماء الملائكة مثل جبريل وميكائيل، لأن عمر بن الخطاب رضى الله تعالى عنه قدكره ذلك، ولم يأتنا عن أحد من الصحابة ولا التابعين أنه سمى ولداً له باسم أحد منهم ، هذا قول حميد بن زنجويه). شرح السنة للامام البغوى : ٣٣٦/١٢

قال الإمام النووي : وقد كره بعض العلماء التسمي باسماء الملائكة وهو قول الحارث بن مسکین :قال وکره مالک التسمي بجبريل وياسين). شرح مسلم : ١١٧/١٤

وزاد العلامة العيني بقوله : وكره مالک التسمي بجبريل وإسرافيل وميكائيل ونحوها من أسماء الملائكة وعن عمر بن الخطاب له أنه قال: ما قنعتم بأسماء بني آدم حتى سمعتم بأسماء الملائكة . (عمدة القاری: ٢٥٥/٢٢)

قال العلامة ابن عابدين الشامي: تتمة : التسمية باسم لم يذكره الله تعالى في عباده ولا ذكره رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ولا يستعمله المسلمون تكلموا فيه الأولى أن لا يفعل) .فتاوى الشامي: ٤١٧/٦
