QUESTION:
Is it permissible to make Zikr while chewing gum (i.e. having chewing-gum in one’s mouth)?
ANSWER:
Engaging in Zikrullah while chewing gum is against the etiquettes of taking Allah’s name. No person, while chewing gum, speaks to a senior or a person in authority. How can one then be meeting Allah while chewing gum? Hadrat Hakim Akhtar Saheb Rahimahullah has written that engaging in Zikrullah is meeting with Allah Ta’ala. Furthermore, the Mashaaikh have written that maximum benefit will only be attained if Zikr is carried out with total concentration and devotion. This is not possible whilst chewing gum.
