Male experiencing continuous discharge
Question:-
As a young man, sometimes I experience continuous discharge, which is a clear, sticky, transparent fluid. This occurs at most random times. How do I purify myself when this happens, and, is it necessary to always change the clothes?
Answer:-
The discharge experienced by a male could either be categorised as Mani, Mazi or Wadi. Mani (semen) is generally thick and white in colour. When semen emits, the desire of a person subsides. The emission of semen necessitates Ghusl.
The second category is Mazi (pre-coital fluid), which is a thin discharge that emerges generally at the time of foreplay, or when one gets excited by casting lustful glances, or when fantasizing about the opposite gender, which is obviously Haraam. The emergence of Mazi necessitates Wudhu and not Ghusl.
The third category is Wadi which is a thin fluid that emerges after relieving oneself. The emergence of this fluid necessitates Wudhu.
It is recorded in Badaa’i-us-Sanaa’I that l, if Wudhu or Ghusl is required due to the emergence of any fluid from the body, then such fluid will be considered as Najis. Hence, in your case you will be required to wash off the impurity from your clothing (if the discharge rubbed onto the clothing), by washing the impure area thrice and squeezing it each time. However, it will not be necessary to change the clothing. From the description of the discharge provided by you, it seems that the discharge falls in the category of pre-coital fluid (Mazi).
We suggest that you always place some toilet paper or tissue on your underwear, which will assist in protecting your clothing from being soiled. The discharge will be absorbed by the tissue or toilet paper, instead of transferring onto your clothing. In this instance, you will only be required to discard the soiled tissue or toilet paper, wash yourself, and renew your Wudhu. We hope that the above explanation clarifies the matter.
Now, if a person experiences continuous discharge from his private part that lasts throughout an entire Salaah time, to the extent that one does not get sufficient time to perform Salaah without the discharge emerging, then such a person will be classified as a Ma’zoor (an excused person) according to Shariah [[i]]. The laws of an excused person (Ma’zoor) will apply in such a scenario. He will be required to wait until the end of the Salaah time, which is approximately 10 minutes before the Salaah time terminates, when he will wash himself, renew his Wudhu, and perform Salaah. This will be the ruling for the first Salaah time.
If the discharge emerges in the subsequent Salaah time even once, then he will remain as a Ma’zoor. However, he may now renew his Wudhu at the beginning of every Salaah time, and perform as many Salaah as he wishes, recite Quraan Sharif, etc.[[ii]] He will not be required to wait until the end of the Salaah time as in the first instance.
Now, if a Ma’zoor is convinced that if he washes his clothing before commencing his Salaah the clothing will get soiled during Salaah again (due to experiencing continuous discharge), then it will not be necessary to wash the clothes before Salaah. However, if the individual is certain that if the clothing is washed before Salaah it will not get soiled before completing his Salaah, then it will be necessary to wash the clothing before commencing Salaah.
