Matric Dinners

QUESTION:

Is it permissible to host a matric dinner, taking into account that there will be separate seating for males and females?

ANSWER:

If one reflects upon the origins of such base activities, it becomes evident that they stem from practices introduced by non-believers who merely sought avenues of amusement and indulgence. Given that these practices originated in such circles, it is only to be expected that the vices and sinful elements associated with them will inevitably be adopted by Muslims who choose to participate in such activities. Males and females being separate is not a green card for such events. People generally begin any action with noble intentions. However, if such actions are not condoned by our seniors, they can lead to many harms that prove disastrous for the Ummah at large—all because one individual, despite having a noble intention, chose not to consult with a senior.

Many young people see such events as a “once in a lifetime” opportunity and develop a false fear of missing out. But one should reflect: has anyone really suffered harm by staying away from such functions? In contrast, is it worth risking your relationship with Allah Ta‘ala by attending gatherings where peer pressure often leads people into actions with lasting and harmful consequences?

A single night of indulgence can easily become the first step toward long-term problems such as drug addiction. Many individuals—even those who thought they could resist—have lost their chastity because of such events. Think also of the future: as a parent one day, would you want pictures of yourself dressed immodestly or seen in indecent settings to resurface before your children, spouse, in-laws, or community?

What seems like glory today may become deep regret tomorrow.

Due to the immediate and eventual disasters that could occur from such events—be it on an Imaani level, financial level, in a person’s social circles, as well as in his family—our Darul Ifta would strictly advise abstention.
