Permissibility of Arts and Drama educator

Aug 27, 2023 | Employment / Commission

QUESTION:

I am a theatre and drama teacher at a school and I teach students of Grades 6, 7 an 8. I was wondering if the job is permissible, and earning from it is Halal or not, as it was clearly mentioned in the school contract that I have to motivate kids for a career in the theatre and drama field?

ANSWER:

If, as a theatre and drama teacher, you are required to teach children to act, imitate cartoon or TV characters, or both males and females play different roles in the play, or the costumes worn by the actors are tight-fitting and revealing to the extent that the Satr is exposed, and music is played during these plays, and plays are recorded on video, then participating in such plays or teaching teenagers how to act in such plays, is Haraam. The Quraan Sharif categorically states, “And do not assist in acts of sin and transgression.” [Maa’idah Verse 2] You should therefore sincerely repent for your past errors and seek another job where you are not required to do anything against Shariah. If you are genuine in your quest to earn a pure and Halaal income, then Allah Ta’ala will open the way, as the Quraan Sharif states, “Whoever fears Allah then He will make an opening for him and sustain him from where he cannot even imagine.” [Re:- Surah Talaaq Verses 1-2]. Teaching secular subjects that are free of Kufr and sin such as mathematics, accounting, etc. are permitted with the proviso that one educates males only, as teaching mature girls is Haraam.
