Pulling the letter ‘Laam’ in “Allah’ during Adhaan

Question:-

For what duration should the letter ‘Laam’ in ‘Allah’ be pulled during the Adhaan?

Answer:-

The Fuqaha have stated that there is leeway for pulling the “Laam” in the word ‘Allah’ (thereby indicating towards the greatness of Allah), up to the duration of seven Alifs. According to one view, one is permitted to pull even longer than this. However, as stated above, this is only in the ‘Laam’ of Allah and the reason for pulling more than usual is to indicate towards the greatness of Almighty Allah.

فن تجوید کے اعتبار سے اذان کے ان کلمات کو جن پر مد اصلی ہے تعظیم  واہتمام  کی غرض سےایک  الف  سے زائد کھینچنا درست ہے – حضرات فقہاء نے اسباب مد میں مد تعظیمی کو بھی شمار کیا  ہے – حضرت مولانا قاری فتح محمد صاحب پانی پتی رح نے مفتاح الکمال مین تحریر فرمایا  ہے :- سبب مد کی دو قسمیں ہیں     : ایک لفظی  ، دوسری معنوی ، معنوی بھی دو ہیں  : ایک نفی میں مبالغہ اور دوسرا  تعظیم یعنی شان کی  بڑائی ظاہر کرنا  ، اور یہ لفظ  ‘اللہ’ میں ہوتا ہے اس میں فقہاء نے سات الف کے  برابر مد کرنا بھی  درست بتایا  ہے –  مفتاح الکمال ۶۵،۶۶

اور ایک قول کے مطابق  اس سے زائد بھی کھینچ سکتے ہیں) فتاوی دار العلوم  زکریا ص۷۷ ج۲(

واعلم ان محل المد بعد اللام من الله ولا يمدّ في غيره (الاذكار ص42)

ومد لام الله صواب (الفتاوي الهندية ص73 ج1)

Notwithstanding the apparent leeway granted in the above texts, we wish to bring to your attention that Hadhrat Moulana Abrarul-Haqq Saheb Rahmatullahi Alaih was very much opposed to pulling the Madd of the Laam in the word Allah, even in Adhaan. He would emphatically say, that if there was general permission for this, then why is it that the Qurra do not pull seven Alifs in the Laam of Allah for example when reciting قل هو الله احد in Surah Ikhlaas? [Ref: Majaalis-e-Abraar Vol. 1, Pg. 6 under the section of “Ummat ki Pareshaani Aur Inhitaat].

Hadhrat Moulana Abrarul-Haqq Saheb Rahmatullahi Alaih used to cite as proof, text from the Kitaab نهاية قول المفيد ,that declares pulling this Madd of the Laam in Allah as a grave Bid’ah, and something extremely Makrooh and abhorrent. Hereunder is the text:-

فما يفعله بعض أئمة المساجد واكثر المؤذنين من الزيادة فى المد الطبيعى عن حده العرفى أى عرف القراء فمن أقبح البدع وأشد الكراهة   (نهاية القول المفيد ص 166)

You can gauge from the above that there is a difference of opinion with regard to this issue. When Hadhrat Moulana Abrarul-Haqq Saheb Rahmatullahi Alaih used to raise this topic, many of his contemporaries concurred with him on the matter. Due to this, caution would dictate, and we too would advise, that the Laam in the word Allah should not be pulled (more so to the extent of so many Alifs as advocated in the first text), whether it is while reciting the Qur’aan or in Adhaan.
