QUESTION:
Is reading non-Islamic material in the toilet Haraam, or Makrooh? Please explain the harms.
ANSWER:
One should refrain from speaking and reading any literature in the toilet or restroom, particularly if it contains the name of Allah and His Rasul Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam. In fact, one should leave the restroom immediately after relieving oneself. In conclusion, reading and talking in the toilet is against the ettiquettes of using the toilet. We haven’t found any harms of reading in the toilet recorded in the Kitaabs. However, we have heard senior Ulama mentioning that it weakens the memory.
