Reciting Quraan Sharif without Wudhu

Sep 7, 2022 | Quraan-e-Majeed

Question:-

If I am reciting Quraan Sharif or Tasbeehaat whilst walking or doing some exercise and my Wudhu breaks, is it permissible for me to continue reciting Qur’aan Sharif from memory before renewing my Wudhu?

Answer:-

The Ulama have written that, when it is Waajib to honour the letters and words of the Quraan Sharif (which is recorded in a book form by making Wudhu when touching the Quraan Sharif), then the letters that are uttered (by making Tilaawat) should be respected and honoured to a greater extent. Therefore, reciting the Quraan Sharif from memory in a state of Wudhu should have also been a requirement for Tilaawat. However, the narration of Ibn Abbas Radiallahu Anhu in Bukhari and Muslim Sharif, and the narration of Ali Radiallahu Anhu in Musnad Ahmad, proves that Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam recited the Quraan Sharif without Wudhu. It is on this basis that the jurists permitted Tilaawat without Wudhu when reciting from memory.

In conclusion, you may continue with Tilaawat in a state of Hadath (without Wudhu) if you are reciting from memory or engaged in Zikrullah.
