Rights Of Grandparents

QUESTION:

What rights do grandparents enjoy over their grandchildren? Is my son allowed to to limit visitation between us and his children?

ANSWER:

The son should allow you to see his children more often. While it is the parent’s choice to allow their child to meet their relatives or not, good Akhlaaq (character) demands that they do allow their children to do so often, if there are no Deeni reasons to stop the children.

If we lived our lives by the book, then after your son became Baaligh, you could have shown him the door and commanded him to fend for himself, but good Akhlaaq from the side of the parents was that they continued looking after their children, even after they reached the age of puberty.

 وَوَصَّيْنَا الْإِنسَانَ بِوَالِدَيْهِ إِحْسَانًا ۖ حَمَلَتْهُ أُمُّهُ كُرْهًا وَوَضَعَتْهُ كُرْهًا ۖ وَحَمْلُهُ وَفِصَالُهُ ثَلَاثُونَ شَهْرًا ۚ حَتَّىٰ إِذَا بَلَغَ أَشُدَّهُ وَبَلَغَ أَرْبَعِينَ سَنَةً قَالَ رَبِّ أَوْزِعْنِي أَنْ أَشْكُرَ نِعْمَتَكَ الَّتِي أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيَّ وَعَلَىٰ وَالِدَيَّ وَأَنْ أَعْمَلَ صَالِحًا تَرْضَاهُ وَأَصْلِحْ لِي فِي ذُرِّيَّتِي ۖ إِنِّي تُبْتُ إِلَيْكَ وَإِنِّي مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ

[ الأحقاف: 15]
