QUESTION:
Is it permissible to perform Salaah facing an open fire, or a gas heater, or the like?
ANSWER:
The Fuqaha have written that to perform Salaah facing a fire is resemblance to the fire worshippers hence Makrooh. [Re: Fataawa Uthmaaniyyah Vol:2 Pg:168] However, such resemblance is not found when performing Salaah before a gas heater or a lantern, as the heater is used to acquire warmth and a lantern is used for light.
لا يكره التوجه لمصحف أو سيف معلق لأنهما لا يعبدان وقال تعالى ﴿وَلْيَأْخُذُوا حِذْرَهُمْ وَأَسْلِحَتَهُمْ﴾ أو ظهر قاعد يتحدث في المختار لعدم التشبه بعبدة الصور وصلى ابن عمر إلى ظهر نافع أو شمع أو سراج على الصحيح لأنه لا يشبه عبادة المجوس (مراقي الفلاح شرح متن نور الإيضاح ج١ص١٣٦)
