School Fees
QUESTION:
At the beginning of the year, I enrolled my 5-year-old son into Grade R at a home-based school. One of the clauses on the registration form, which I signed, was that the school be notified a month in advance should we decide to deregister the child.
We have now decided to take him out of the school as we feel that he is not ready yet. His last day was in June when the school closed for holiday, and we notified the school during mid-July that he will not be returning to school when school reopens. In terms of Shari’ah, am I obliged to pay the fees for the month of July?
ANSWER:
In principle, it was necessary for you to give the school a month’s notice, as you had signed to it. Unfortunately, this was not done and, as Muslims, we should honour the contract. Hence, you will be responsible to pay the fees for July.
