Severing Family Ties For Deeni Reasons

Oct 28, 2025 | Family Matters

QUESTION:

My daughter conceived a child out of wedlock with her step-father. They live together now as husband and wife. Am I liable to maintain a relationship with my daughter and her child by visiting them? Please advise as to how I should navigate this dilemma.

ANSWER:

From the outset, you should continuously advise your daughter to cut off all ties with her step-father as this is a Haraam relationship and they are living in Zina. Also, you should continue making fervent Dua for her that Allah Ta’ala brings her back to her senses and guides her. Due to Deeni reasons, it is permitted to sever ties with your daughter and not visit the child, as it may lead to normalization of the situation. It is mentioned regarding Hadrat Abdullah ibn Umar Radiallahu Anhu, that he stopped speaking to his son due to a Deeni reason.

Furthermore, we recite these in the Dua-e-Qunoot narrated by Hadrat Abdullah Bin Masood Radiallahu Anhu:

ونخلع ونترك من يفجرك

And we disassociate and leave those who violate your commands

It is recorded in Umdatul Huffaz that we should disassociate and absolve ourselves from those who disobey Allah Ta’ala and deny His promises and warnings.

وفي دعاء القنوت: “ونخلع ونترك من يفجرك” أي من يعصيك ويكذب بوعدك ووعيدك  (عمدة الحفاظ 3/204)

ALLAH TA’ALA ALONE IN HIS INFINITE KNOWLEDGE KNOWS BEST!
