Sitting next to the deceased while in menses

May 4, 2023 | Janaazah

Question:-

Is a female who is experiencing her menstrual cycle, permitted to sit near the Mayyit? We had learnt that they are not allowed to sit next to the deceased, nor are they allowed to sit in the same room. What if it’s a close relative who passed away, such as one’s mother? How do we cope with not being able to sit near them?

Answer:-

The ruling is correct. A female experiencing her menstrual cycle (Haidh) or postnatal bleeding (Nifaas), should not be present near the Mayyit. We do understand that one would love to be close to their beloved one just before their final departure towards the hereafter, however, there are two things that should be considered at this stage; the command of Shariah, which is not to be near the deceased, and secondly, what will be of benefit to the deceased, as this is more important. We should, therefore, continuously carry out such actions that will benefit the deceased and please them. The good deeds passed over to them will be greatly appreciated.
