QUESTION:
If one wants to purchase something for his family for Aa’shura from an online store, should he purchase it before and give it on Aa’shura, or should he purchase on Aa’shura and give it thereafter?
ANSWER:
Imam Baihaqi Rahimahullah has recorded the following narration:
عن أبي هريرة أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم قال من وسع على عياله و أهله يوم عاشوراء وسع الله عليه سائر سنته (شعب الايمان للبيهقي #3795)
Abu Hurairah Radiallahu Anhu reports from Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, “Whoever spends generously on his family on the day of Aa’shura then Allah Ta’ala will grant him abundance throughout the year.”
The Mubarak words of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam clearly state “Whoever spends on the day of Aa’shura”, hence, one understands from this that one should spend on one’s family on the day of Aa’shura. If an item is purchased on the day of Aa’shura, and it is delivered on the same day then well and good, otherwise it may be handed over to the family whenever it arrives.
In fact, there is a discussion amongst the Muhadditheen whether one should spend on the day of Aa’shura or the night preceding the day of Aa’shura. Most of the commentators of Hadith are of the opinion that it refers to spending on the 10th day of Muharram.
However, there is a view recorded by Hadrat Maulana Khalil Ahmad Saheb Saharanpuri Rahimahullah in Bazlul Majhood which states that it refers to the night preceding the 10th day as well. Hence, if a person spends on his family and feeds them on the eve of the 10th, then based on this view, one will receive the virtue mentioned in the Hadith for spending on one’s family.
