QUESTION:
If one has only gold jewellery to pay Zakaah on, should he consider the value of the jewellery, or the weight?
ANSWER:
The Fuqaha have stated that Zakaat is Waajib on gold when one owns 20 Mithqaal (87.48 grams) of gold. This will be the ruling if one possesses only gold and no other Zakaatable assets.
For example, if one possesses 60g of gold valued at R30 000.00, and this is the only Zakaatable asset that he possesses, then he will not be required to discharge Zakaat as 60 grams of gold is less than the gold Zakaat Nisaab.
