Status Of Imaan Concerning The Belief In Allah Ta’ala

QUESTION:

If a person truly believes that Allah Ta’ala is in contact with His Throne—meaning that He is sitting, that He has made a movement to sit on His Throne, but the movement is ignored—does this person remain a Muslim? If he persists in this belief and says that Allah Ta’ala is composed of limbs, and maintains this until his last breath, is Janaazah Salaah performed for him? Could you please provide references from the Hanafi Madhab?

ANSWER:

Many Hanafi texts mention that such a person will become a Kaafir. However, the principles of the Hanafi Mathab are extremely strict and require a cautious approach when ruling an individual to be a Kaafir. This can be seen from the texts provided below. As such, we can say this belief is dangerously close to Kufr, but does not remove him from the fold of Islam. Thus, his Janazah Salah will be performed.

قال الإمام زين الدين ابن نجيم: و يكفر بإثبات المكان لله تعالى، فإن قال الله في السماء، فإن قصد حكاية ما جاء في ظاهر الأخبار لا يكفر و إن اراد المكان كفر

(البحر الرائق ج٥/ص١٢٩)

و في الفتاوى الهندية: يكفر بإثبات المكان لله تعالى

(الفتاوى الهندية ج٢/ص٢٥٩)

قال العلامة ميمون بن محمد النسفي: فيكون القول بإثبات المكان له ردا لهذا النص المحكم، أي قوله تعالى) و ليس كمثله شئ(، الذي لا احتمال فيه لوجه ما سوى ظاهره، و راد النص كافر عصمنا الله من ذلك

قال العلامة مفتي رضاء الحق: و حاصل ما ذكرنا و حكينا أن الإفتاء بكفر القائل ببعض الكلمات المذكورة و الفتاوى المذكورة في هذا الصدد أكثرها تحذرية لا تحقيقية. أما إذا صرح القائل بأنه أراد معنى الكفر فقد سد هو على نفسه باب التأويل

و قال العلامة ابن عابدين:

و كل قول ينفي الكفرا               عن مسلم و لو ضعيفا أحرى
