QUESTION:
1. If a person takes medicine daily for no reason, is that considered as taking drugs?
2. Are steroids permissible?
3. Are glucose tablets permissible to take for sporting purposes?
ANSWER:
1. If the medication is unnecessarily taken with the intention of entertainment and attaining extreme pleasure, then it will be Haraam. In fact, the jurists have written that if one drinks water or any other permissible liquid for entertainment or attaining extreme pleasure like the transgressors of Shariah do, then it will be Haraam. [Re: Fataawa Uthmaaniyyah Vol:10 Pg:205]
2. Drugs known as ‘anabolic steroids’ are made in laboratories and have the same chemical structure as the steroids found in the male sex hormone testosterone. These are sometimes abused to promote muscle growth, enhance athletic or other physical performance. Steroids reduce redness and swelling (inflammation.) This can help with inflammatory conditions such as asthma and eczema. It also reduces the activity of the immune system, which is the body’s natural defence against illness and infection.
If steroids are used as a medical treatment prescribed by a doctor, then there is no harm in using it particularly if the ingredients are Halaal. If the ingredients are Haraam, then it may be used if there is no other Halaal alternative found and prescribed by a Muslim doctor for one’s illness. It may also be used for strength or energy with the proviso that it is manufactured from Halaal ingredients. However, if it is harmful to the body then one should refrain from its usage. [Re:- Kitaabun Nawaazil Pg.200 Vol.16]
3. Yes, they may be used for energy and strength. [Re:- Kitaabun Nawaazil Pg.200 Vol.16] If one utilizes his energy (derived from the use of medication) in the wrong avenues, then he will be sinful for his actions.
