Studying after Asr

Question:-

What is the reason for not doing homework or studying between Asr and Maghrib? My daughter doesn’t allow my son to do any homework, and after Maghrib, it gets too late for school and Madrassah homework.

Answer:-

We apologize for the delay in responding which was due to researching the question posed to us. After extensively searching the Mas’ala, we haven’t found any prohibition for studying after Asr. Firstly, the students at Darul Uloom are generally left free after Asr to relax after an intensive day of studies, partake of meals and so that they are able to engage in Zikrullah, Tilaawat of the Quraan Sharif and Dua, since the time after Asr is a Mubarak and blessed time for the remembrance of Allah Ta’ala.

We found a narration that states, “Whoever honours his two beloveds should not write after Asr.” It is for this reason that Imaam Ahmad Rahimahullah used to advise some of his companions not to look in the Kitaab after Asr.” Hence, according to this narration, it seems like studying after Asr weakens the eyesight of a person. Imaam Shafi’ee Rahimahullah has quoted a narration which is quoted in Baihaqi as well, “The papermaker will eat the blood money of his eyes.”

من اكرم حبيبتيه  فلا يكتب بعد العصر ليس في المرفوع ولكن قد اوصي الامام احمد بعض اصحابه ان لا ينظر بعد العصر في كتاب اخرجه الخطيب وغيره وقال الشافعي رحمه الله فيما رواه حرملة ابن يحي كما اخرجه البيهقي في مناقبه الوراق انما ياكل دية عينيه   (المقاصد الحسنة ص399 )

The other prohibition found in the Hadith is from sleeping after Asr, hence, one should refrain from sleeping.

عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: مَنْ نَامَ بَعْدَ الْعَصْرِ فَاخْتُلِسَ عَقْلُهُ فَلَا يَلُومَنَّ إِلَّا نَفْسَهُ (مسند ابي يعلٰي)
