Sunnah Kurta

Jul 16, 2025 | Appearance And Attire

QUESTION:

In light of the classical texts that form the basis of our Deen, what was the Kurta of Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam? Was it the shirt (Indo-Pak) style Kurta, or was it the longer Arab style, or was it something else altogether? Would it be proper to classify only one type as Sunnah?

ANSWER:

We haven’t found any clear-cut narration which provides a distinct description of the Kurta of Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam in terms of whether it was slit on the sides or not. However, the Ulama have written that the Kurta worn by the righteous and pious will be preferable to wear. Amongst the righteous and pious, there are those that wear the long Kurta that rests above the ankles, whilst others wear the short Kurta with slits on the side which was worn by a number of our Akaabireen in the past, and is worn by a number of the current day Ulama-e-Haqq. Hence, one may adopt any of the above attire.
