Sunnah Method Of Jumu’ah Proceedings

QUESTION:

What is the Sunnah method of the Jumuʿah Salaah? In South Africa, traditionally, the lecture is given first, followed by the Khutbah. This is currently the same method adopted in our community as well. However, in some places, after the lecture, a five-minute interval follows for Sunnah prayers, and then the Khutbah. Which method is closer to the Sunnah?

ANSWER:

Both these methods are permissible and would depend on what works best for the community. If people are neglecting the Sunnah Salaah because they are coming late, then by giving allowance for the Sunnah before the Khutbah, it would encourage everyone to perform the Sunnah and ensure that it is not being left out. Neither of these methods are contrary to the Sunnah.

If there is a need to alter the system, the Musallees should be informed that it is for the smooth facilitation of the Jumuah Salaah, and that it does not oppose the Sunnah.

– أخبرنا أحمد بن سلمان الفقيه ، ثنا إسماعيل بن إسحاق القاضي ، ثنا أحمد بن يونس ، ثنا عاصم بن محمد بن زيد ، عن أبيه ، قال : كان أبو هريرة يقوم يوم الجمعة إلى جانب المنبر فيطرح أعقاب نعليه في ذراعيه ، ثم يقبض على رمانة المنبر ، يقول : قال أبو القاسم صلى الله عليه وسلم ، قال محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم : قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم : قال الصادق المصدوق صلى الله عليه وسلم ، ثم يقول في بعض ذلك : ” ويل للعرب من شر قد اقترب ” فإذا سمع حركة باب المقصورة بخروج الإمام جلس .

” هذا حديث صحيح على شرط الشيخين ولم يخرجاه هكذا ، وليس الغرض منه تصحيح حديث ” ويل للعرب من شر قد اقترب ” فقد أخرجاه ، إنما الغرض فيه استحباب رواية الحديث على المنبر قبل خروج الإمام ” (المستدرك للحاكم ١/٣٠٦)
