Sunnat Salaah of Jumuah in the era of Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam

Aug 30, 2023 | Jumuah / Eid

QUESTION:

In the time of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, there was only one Adhaan for Jumuah, followed by the Khutbah. Were the Sunnats performed before the Adhaan, or were the Sunnats performed after the Adhaan before the Khutbah?

ANSWER:

The Mubarak Hadith of Nabi Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam states that the first Adhaan in the time of Nabi Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam would be called when the Imaam would sit on the Mimbar. This indicates that the Sunnat Salaah was performed before the Adhaan but after Zawaal.

However, when Madinah Sharif had expanded in the time of Hadrat Uthmaan Radiallahu Anhu, then the Adhaan that was called out before the Mimbar was no longer sufficient to inform the people (that the time of Jumuah had entered). Hence, Hadrat Uthmaan Radiallahu Anhu after consulting with the other Sahaabah introduced the second Adhaan for Jumuah. This Adhaan was given at a place called Zohraa, which was an elevated place next to the marketplace. By this Adhaan being called, people were informed that the time of Jumuah had entered and a few minutes later, the Adhaan would be called before Uthmaan Radiallahu Anhu while he was seated on the mimbar.
