The best Durood

QUESTION:

I’d like to know if there is more virtue in reading a shorter Durood such as “صلي الله عليه و سلم” many times, or a longer Durood, such as Durood-e-Ebrahim, or any other lengthy Durood, a less amount of times?

ANSWER:

The best Durood is Durood-e-Ibrahim, hence it is recited in Salaah. The quantity is not the objective, rather the quality is. This is understood from the Quraan Sharif, “He has created death and life to test which of you carry out the best acts.” [Surah 67, Verse 2] Although the recitation of any Durood is beneficial, it is encouraged that one recites the best Durood with concentration, devotion and with love for the master Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam.    

(أَفْضَلُ صِيَغِ الصَّلَاةِ) وَأَفْضَلُ الْعِبَارَاتِ عَلَى مَا قَالَ السُّيُوطِيّ: اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ، وَقِيلَ هُوَ التَّعْظِيمُ؛ فَالْمَعْنَى اللَّهُمَّ عَظِّمْهُ فِي الدُّنْيَا بِإِعْلَاءِ ذِكْرِهِ وَإِنْفَاذِ شَرِيعَتِهِ، وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ بِتَضْعِيفِ أَجْرِهِ وَتَشْفِيعِهِ فِي أُمَّتِهِ كَمَا قَالَهُ ابْنُ الْأَثِيرِ (رد المحتار ص13 ج1)
