Tying A Turban

QUESTION:

Is there a preferred side to start from when tying a turban?

ANSWER:

We have not found a clear Hadith specifically mentioning that one should begin tying the turban from the right side. However, since tying a turban is from the acts of adornment and aesthetic appeal, it is preferable to begin from the right side-based on the general principle of beginning with the right in matters of attire and other good actions.

Sayyidatuna Aisha Radiallahu Anha reports that the Messenger of Allah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam would prefer beginning from the right when wearing his shoes, combing his hair, performing Wudhu, and in all his good and commendable affairs.

Accordingly, it is preferable to begin tying the turban from the right side in accordance with this general Sunnah.

– حَدَّثَنَا حَفْصُ بْنُ عُمَرَ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي أَشْعَثُ بْنُ سُلَيْمٍ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ أَبِي، عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ:

كَانَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يُعْجِبُهُ التَّيَمُّنُ فِي تَنَعُّلِهِ وَتَرَجُّلِهِ وَطُهُورِهِ، وَفِي شَأْنِهِ كُلِّهِ.

[٤١٦، ٥٠٦٥، ٥٥١٦، ٥٥٨٢].

أخرجه مسلم في الطهارة، باب: التيمن في الطهور وغيره، رقم: ٢٦٨.

(يعجبه) يحب، من الإعجاب، وهو الرغبة في الشيء لحسنه. (التيمن) استعمال اليمين في تعاطي الأشياء، والابتداء باليمين وهو المقصود هنا. (تنعله) لبسه النعل. (ترجله) دهن شعره وتسريحه. (طهوره) تطهره من الحدث أو النجس. (شأنه كله) كل عمل من الأعمال الطيبة المستحسنة، لا الأعمال الخبيثة المستقذرة، فإنه يستعمل لها اليسار، ويبدأ باليسار، كالاستنجاء ودخول بيت الخلاء.
