Undergoing a vasectomy

Aug 26, 2023 | Miscellaneous

QUESTION:

I have been suffering for years with fibromyalgia. I have the Mirena loop as a method of contraception, but I am considering removing it as it might be a contributing factor to my pain. Can my husband have a vasectomy since it is a reversible procedure?

ANSWER:

It is impermissible for a male to undergo a vasectomy procedure. However, the Fuqaha (jurists) have written that if a woman is extremely weak or encountering serious health issues which could cause health complications, or cause her health condition to deteriorate even further (if she is impregnated), then adopting some form of contraceptive measure will be permitted, such as using birth control pills, or the husband may use a condom during intimacy. However, a vasectomy is not an option.
