Virtue of Barni dates

QUESTION:

What virtue is attached to Barni dates?

ANSWER:

It is recorded in a lengthy narration of Musnad Ahmad that Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam indicated towards a heap of dates and said (to the Sahaabah), “Do you call this Barni?”  We replied, “Yes!” Rasulullah Salallahu Alaihi Wasallam said, “It is from the best of your dates and most beneficial for you.” The narrator states, “We returned from that expedition of ours and began planting it excessively, and our inclination towards it increased greatly to the extent that most of our date palm trees and dates were Barni.”

   ثُمَّ أَوْمَأَ إِلَى صُبْرَةٍ فَقَالَ أَتُسَمُّونَ هَذَا الْبَرْنِيَّ قُلْنَا نَعَمْ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلى الله عَليه وسَلم أَمَا إِنَّهُ مِنْ خَيْرِ تَمْرِكُمْ وَأَنْفَعِهِ لَكُمْ قَالَ فَرَجَعْنَا مِنْ وِفَادَتِنَا تِلْكَ فَأَكْثَرْنَا الْغَرْزَ مِنْهُ وَعَظُمَتْ رَغْبَتُنَا فِيهِ حَتَّى صَارَ عُظْمُ نَخْلِنَا وَتَمْرِنَا الْبَرْنِيَّ   (مسند احمد ص3104 ج5)
