Males wearing rings made from Tungsten

QUESTION:

Are men permitted to wear rings manufactured from Tungsten?

ANSWER:

Men are prohibited from wearing both ‘Tungsten rings’ and ‘Tungsten carbide rings.’ Pure ‘Tungsten rings’ are soft and can easily be scratched, bent or damaged, whilst “Tungsten carbide” is one of the hardest, most durable metals from which jewellery is made.

“Tungsten carbide” rings are created by combining tungsten powder with carbon and nickel. Since both rings do not fall in the category of silver, men are not permitted to wear the ring. The Kitaabs of Fiqh clearly state that men are permitted to wear rings made of silver only, with the proviso that they do not exceed 4.374g in weight.

Also, wearing a ring is Sunnah for those who are in need of a ring such as, a king, judge and those in their category. As for those that are not in need of using a ring, it is better for them not to wear it.

ولا يتختم الرجل إلا بفضة * أما لا يتختم بالذهب للحديث المعروف * وكذا التختم بالحديد لأنه خاتم أهل النار (فتاوي قاضيخان ص253 ج3)

  ثم التختم سنة لمن يحتاج إليه كالسلطان والقاضي ومن في معناهما ومن لا حاجة له إليه فتركه أفضل

والسنة أن يكون قدر مثقال فما دونه ويكره التختم بالحديد والصفر للرجال والنساء لأنه حلية أهل النار وقد نهى عنه (الاختيار لتعليل المختار ص159 ج4)
