Visiting graves of the pious
Question:-
Is it permissible to visit the Mazaars (graves of the pious) or not? If yes, what are the etiquettes of visiting the graves?
Answer:-
We are not prohibited from visiting the graves of the Buzurgs occasionally (without any form of compulsion), if such a visit is free of innovations and corrupt practices. However, since a number of evil practices (such as Shirk and innovations) are prevalent nowadays in such places, it is not appropriate for the seniors that are worthy of being followed to openly visit such places, nor is it appropriate for the seniors to encourage the masses to visit such places. It is necessary to refrain from such places where evil practices are common. [Re:- Kifaayatul Mufti Pg.180 – 181 Vol.4 / Kitaabun Nawaazil Pg.270 Vol.6]
Notwithstanding the above, if one visits a Mazaar that is totally free of innovations and corrupt practices, then one should simply make Dua for the deceased or recite Quraan Sharif and pass over the rewards to the deceased. This is the maximum that should be done.
