QUESTION:
I would like to gift my wife a necklace with the names of our children either in English or Arabic on them. My son’s name is Muhammad and I would like to know if it is permissible to do this? If so, does it matter if it is in English or Arabic?
ANSWER:
Allah Ta’ala states in the Quraan Majeed:
And whosoever honours the Symbols of Allah, then it is indeed from the piety of the heart.
Every aspect of our Deen demands Adab and respect. A person with Adab excels and reaches very far whilst a person without Adab is deprived. Respecting the symbols of Deen such as the Topi, the Adhaan, the day of Jumuah, the Quraan Sharif, etc. is an indication of Taqwa in one’s heart.
The bathroom is a place of impurity and filth; hence it is incorrect to enter places of impurity with the names of Allah Ta’ala, Ambiya Alaihimus Salaam, etc. inscribed on a necklace. Yes, a female is permitted to wear a gold necklace (as described in your query), but she should not enter the bathroom if names of Ambiya are inscribed on the chain. All forms of writing are a means of knowledge and should be respected, hence it is best not to enter the bathroom with clothing or jewellery comprising of writing.
There is really no benefit in inscribing names on the necklace except displaying it before others, hence it is best that the necklace is kept free of writing. Also, it is possible that one may have a severe urge to relieve themselves at times and not find sufficient time to remove the chain, hence in such instances one will enter the bathroom with the chain which is disrespectful. It is therefore best that the necklace is kept free of writing whether the writing is in Arabic or English.
