Women wearing platinum jewellery

Jan 16, 2022 | Appearance And Attire

Question:-

Are women permitted to wear platinum jewellery?

Answer:-

Platinum itself is made up of the following metals: platinum, palladium, rhodium, iridium, osmium and ruthenium. However, it is associated or mixed with small amounts of other elements such as gold, copper, nickel and iron.

This brings us to the conclusion that platinum will be considered as a metal (that cannot be categorised as gold) since the metal content in it far exceeds the gold content. Had the gold content (in platinum) been 51% or more, then it would have been considered as a gold metal. However, due to the gold content being minimal as understood from the above excerpt, it will not be considered as gold.

Also, there isn’t any clarity on the metal being classified as a silver metal. In conclusion, we cannot classify platinum as gold nor can we classify it as silver.

Now, women are only permitted to wear rings that are made of gold and silver. Since, platinum is neither categorised as gold or silver, platinum rings should not be worn by women. Yes, platinum jewellery (other than rings) may be utilised by women, since women are permitted to wear jewellery (such as earrings, necklaces etc) of other metals.  [Re:- Behishti Zewar Pg.278 Vol.3]
