Wudhu and Ghusl with permanent retainers

Question:-

Many of my family members and I have had braces in the past. Once our braces were removed, we had permanent retainers placed behind our teeth. It’s a wire that’s held onto some of the teeth by dental ‘cement’. By removing the retainer, there is a possibility of the teeth shifting. Is it okay to have this retainer on? Would our Ghusl and Wudhu still be accepted with this permanent retainer on as most people live the rest of the lives with it in place after having braces?

Answer:-

We understand from your query that you have no option but to keep the permanent retainers attached as there is a fear of the teeth possibly moving out of place. Since the permanent retainer is cemented to the teeth and cannot be removed unless it is removed by a dentist, Wudhu and Ghusl with the attached retainer will be valid.

واذا اغتسل من الجنابة وبقي بين اسنانه طعام فلم يصل الماء تحته جاز (الفتاوي التاتارخانية ص288 ج1)

خراب دانتوں کے اوپر کیپ چڑھانا اسی طرح جو دانت ٹوٹ گئے ہوں ، ان پر دانت لگانا شرعا جائز ہے اور دانتوں کے اوپر جو کیپ لگایا جاتا ہے وہ ہمیشہ کے لئے جام ہوجاتا ہے ، آسانی سے نہیں نکالتا ، اس کے نیچے جو کھانے کے ذرات اور گوشت کے ریشہ وغیرہ گھس جاتے ہیں اور وہ آسانی کے ساتھ نہیں نکلتے ہیں ، تو غسل واجب میں اچھی طرح کلی کرلے اور کھانے کے وہ ذرات اور ریشہ وغیرہ نہ نکلیں تو اسی حالت میں غسل صحیح ہوجائے گا (فتاوی قاسمیہ ص۱۰۶ / ۱۰۷ ج۵)
