Zakaah On Silver-Plated Items

QUESTION:

I received a bracelet as a gift. According to the information on the box, it states, “…plated with real silver…”. Is Zakaah payable on such an item?

ANSWER:

Silver plating is the method of applying a thin layer of pure silver over some other metal. If the alloy content is more than the silver content, then it will not be considered to be silver. Therefore, no Zakaah will be paid on it.

وإذا كان الغالب على الدراهم الفضة فهي فضة وإذا كان الغالب على الدنانير الذهب فهي ذهب

الزكاة واجبة في الذهب والفضة، مضروبة كانت أو غير مضروبة، نوى التجارة أو لا إذا بلغت الفضة مائتي درهم، والذهب عشرين مثقالا (المحيط البرهاني 2/240)
