Blood donation and transfusion

Question:-

Are blood transfusions allowed? Are we allowed to receive blood in the case of necessity due to blood loss during a surgery. Also, are we allowed to donate blood?

Answer:-

If one has lost excessive blood due to surgery, to the extent that there is a fear of losing one’s life, then it is permissible to have blood transfused into one’s body.

Similarly, one is permitted to donate blood when there is a need of saving another person’s life. However, nowadays, the blood is generally tested for diseases such as HIV etc. before transfusion. It is on this basis that one is permitted to donate blood in advance so that the relevant tests can be carried out and the blood can then be utilized at the time of need.
