QUESTION:

My son hasn’t been feeling well. We took him to conventional doctors but they could find no cause for his illness. After the advice of my son’s Ustaadh, we took him to an Aamil. He was given Taweez to burn and one to wear. Upon closer inspection, I saw that the Taweez contained numbers and symbols and not Quraanic Ayaah. Is this acceptable?

ANSWER:

Yes, it is permissible. Aamils generally utilize numbers according to numerical values of ‘Abjad’- a particular method or system of numerology where each letter of the Arabic alphabet corresponds to a number. The total numerical value indicates to the Aayah of the Quraan Majeed. [Re: – Kifaayatul Mufti Pg.504 Vol.12]

فأَخَذَهُمْ عَذَابُ يَوْمِ الظُّلَّةِ – هي سحابة أظلتهم؛ بعد أن عذبوا بالحر الشديد سبعة أيام؛ فاجتمعوا تحتها مستجيرين بها، طامعين في بردها ومائها؛ فأمطرتهم ناراً: فاحترقوا عن آخرهم. قيل: كان لمدين ستة ملوك؛ يسمون: أبجد، هوز، حطى، كلمن، سعفص، قرشت؛ وقد وضعت العرب الكتابة العربية على عدد حروفهم؛ بعد زيادة ستة أحرف؛ جمعوها في ثخذ، ضظغ.
