Bridal receptions

Jan 16, 2023 | Nikaah

Question:-

A) Is it permissible to have/attend a meal which is held after the Nikah. Sometimes, it is refferred to as a “Nikah Reception” ?

B) Is it permissible to attend/host a function where a sheet of cloth is used to divide the hall between the men and women?

Answer:-

1. The meal served after the Nikah, which is generally known as a ‘Bridal reception’ or ‘Nikah reception’, is a custom that is foreign to our Deen. After the Nikah ceremony, the only other celebration is the Walimah which is from the groom’s side. The Walimah is a form of gratitude for the bounty of Nikah. It is, therefore, not correct to host the ‘Nikah reception’, nor is it correct for one to attend such a function.

2. Dividing a venue with a cloth or sheet does not provide proper Purdah. The cloth is many a times opened by children that intend entering from the men’s section into the ladies’ section, or, due to fans or aircons blowing at a high speed etc. Consequently, the laws of Hijaab are violated. Similarly, in instances where a common venue is utilized, both males and females clash at entrances. Many females do not observe proper Hijaab and males do not lower their gaze, which is against Shariah. It is, therefore, totally discouraged to host such functions, and it is discouraged to attend these functions. The females may be hosted at the house, while the males should be hosted at a separate venue for males only, such as the Madrasah classrooms.

At the time of Rukhsati of Hadrat Aisha Radiallahu Anha, the females gathered at the house, hence there is no harm in them attending at the house, particularly if there isn’t any evil practices involved. However, they should be prevented from adorning themselves against Shariah and attending the function. [Re:- Kitaabun Nawaazil Pg.473 Vol.8]
