Celebrating “Women’s Day”

QUESTION:

Across social media, advertisements have been posted referencing fundraisers and other events celebrating “Women’s Day”. Is it permissible for Muslims to partake in this “celebration”?

ANSWER:

The rights of women have been clearly outlined in the Quraan Sharif and the Sunnah of Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam. Islam has afforded a great deal of respect and honour to women and ensures that she is protected at all times whether she is a wife, a daughter, a mother, a sister, etc. There are great virtues mentioned in the Hadith for bringing up daughters. Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam is reported to have said, “Whoever brings up two daughters until they reach maturity, then I will enter into Jannah with him like this (together) – he joined the index and middle finger.” Similarly, Rasulullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam stated that the greatest Sadaqah is spending on one’s daughter who has been divorced, and there is no one to earn for her except you (the father). Another Hadith states that Jannah lies under the feet of the mother. There are many such Ahadith encouraging one to fulfil the rights of a woman in Islam, thus we Muslims do not celebrate “Women’s Day” once a year by serving them and being kind to them; rather we fulfil their rights throughout the year.

‘Women’s Day’ in the western world promotes issues such as gender equality etc. which are in conflict with the teachings of the Quraan and Ahadith, hence, celebrating Women’s day is not permissible for a Muslim.
