Definition of Tilaawat

Question:-

I would like to know if reading Quraan Sharif without moving the lips is permissible? If one does so, will the reward be less?

Answer:-

Fataawa Darul Uloom Deoband states that, Tilaawat of the Quraan Sharif takes place with the tongue, irrespective of whether the Tilaawat is audible or silent. If one experiences difficulty in reciting loudly, then silent Tilaawat with the tongue is also in order. However, if one recites in the heart, then too one will attain reward. [Re:- Fataawa Darul Uloom Deoband Pg.258 Vol.14] Based on the above ruling, Tilaawat in the heart (without moving the tongue) is also acceptable for which one will be rewarded. Whether the reward of Tilaawat made in the heart is equivalent to normal Tilaawat (with the tongue), or it is less, is in the knowledge of Allah Ta’ala.
