Females wearing make-up and jewellery in Ihraam

QUESTION:-

Are women allowed to wear make-up while in the state of Ihraam? Furthermore, is it permissible for them to wear jewellery, like rings, earrings etc.?

ANSWER:-

1. It will not be permissible for females to use make-up in the state of Ihraam, if the make-up consists of any fragrance. We understand that certain products such as lipsticks, etc. contain fragrances hence, such products should not be utilized. If the products are free of fragrance, then too, these superficial items of beautification should be discarded during the blessed days of Hajj. The journey of Hajj is a spiritual journey, whereby a person intends gaining proximity to his or her Creator, and reforming their life. The Haji should, therefore, focus towards seeking forgiveness and becoming the beloved of Allah Ta’ala. This is not the time to dress in exclusive clothing, parade in the shopping centres, and adorn oneself with make-up and other cosmetics. When a person’s heart is connected to Allah Ta’ala and one’s external appearance is pitiable, then the mercy of Allah Ta’ala descends on that person, and one is blessed in every way, perhaps for the rest of one’s life.

والمحرم رجلا كان او امرأة ممنوع من استعمال الطيب، فاذا طيب عضوا كاملا فعليه دم، وفي اقله صدقة أي في الصحيح (مناسك ملا على القاري ٣١٢)

2. The wearing of jewellery for females is permitted while in the state of Ihraam.

ويجوز للمحرمة ان تلبس الحرير والحلي، كذا في الكرخي (الجوهرة النيرة ج١ ص١٥٢)

وتلبس الحرير والذهب وتتحلي بالحلي ما شات (غنية الناسك ٩٤)
