Ghusl In The Absence Of Ablution Facilities

Apr 13, 2026 | Ghusl

QUESTION:

I was admitted to hospital unexpectedly and stayed for a few days. I had access to a communal bathroom without shower facilities. I experience frequent wet dreams, and if it were to occur while in hospital, what would be the best manner to perform Ghusl in the absence of shower facilities? Coupled with this, if I was administered an IV drip, how would I complete the Ghusl?

ANSWER:

We suggest that you should make proper enquiries regarding the shower facilities from the admin. Perhaps there would be shower facilities somewhere in the hospital. However, even if there are no shower facilities in the entire hospital, then too you will be required to perform Ghusl. You may have a bucket bath by perhaps standing in one big bucket (or plastic bath tub) pouring water over yourself. Thereafter, you should clean or request some one to clean the area immediately after you use it, so as not to cause inconvenience to other patients.

Secondly, regarding having Ghusl with the IV drip, you will be required to perform Ghusl as normal and make Masah over the area where the drip is.

Lastly, we advise that you should make the necessary arrangements for Ghusl in the hospital beforehand such as a bucket, a jug for Istinjaa, a mop or cloth to clean the floor, etc.
