Imaam with a lisp

Question:-

Can a person with a lisp be appointed as an Imaam for Salaah in the Masjid?

Answer:-

It is necessary to always recite the Quran Shareef correctly, ensuring that the letters are pronounced from its Makhaarij. The Salaah is invalidated at times due to incorrect recitation or pronunciation of the words. Now, if the lisp is of such a nature that the Imaam is unable to pronounce the words correctly, which results in the meaning changing, and there is no hope of any improvement at all, then a more suitable person should be appointed as the Imaam. However, if he is not pronouncing the letters correctly, but there is a possibility of improving his pronunciation, then he should try to improve his recitation under an expert Qari, and continue with Imaamat. If after trying to improve, he is unable to recite correctly, the Salaah will be valid.

On the other hand, if the lisp does not affect his recitation in any way, rather, he is reciting correctly and pronouncing the words properly, then there is no harm in him leading the Salaah. The decision in the above matter should be entrusted to an expert Qari, and not just any Hafiz or trustee of the Masjid.

ض مستقلاً حرف ہے، اس کا مخرج حافہ لسان اور آخر اس علیا ہے (۲) ، اس کی صفات مستقل ہیں      مجبوره (۱) مستطیله (۲) رخوہ (۳) اس کو ادا کرنا تمام حروف سے زیادہ مشکل ہے ، اس کے لئے بڑی مشق کی ضرورت ہے، کوشش یہ کی جائے کہ اپنے اصل مخرج سے اپنی پوری صفات کے ساتھ ادا ہو اور ممیز ہو جائے ، قصداً اس کو “دال” یا ” زا نیا نہ پڑھے، کوشش کے باوجود جس طرح بھی ادا ہوگا نماز درست ہو جائے گی (۴)۔

ضاء مستقل حرف ہے اس کو کسی دوسرے حرف کے مشابہ قصد ا نہیں پڑھنا چاہئے (۱) ‘ظ’ کے ساتھ صفات میں زیادہ اشتراک ہے۔ نماز کی صحت و فساد معنی کی صحت و فساد اور قدرت ادا پر موقوف ہے (۲)۔
